El zoótropo o deadelum fue un juguete muy popular en la primera mitad del siglo XIX. Creado por William George Horner en 1834, consta de un cilindro o tambor de madera con cortes a través de los cuales el espectador ve una cinta con dibujos que debido al movimiento giratorio del cilindro y el fenómeno de persistencia retiniana dan la impresión de movimiento.
